A Heart That Hears God
Share
Scripture: 1 Samuel 3:10
“Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.”
Focus:
God desires hearts that are ready to listen and obey.
Devotional
Prayer is often thought of as talking to God. While that is true, prayer is also about listening.
When the young Samuel heard God calling him, he responded with a simple but powerful prayer:
“Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.”
What made Samuel’s response so remarkable wasn’t just that he wanted to hear God—it was that he was already willing to obey.
Many of us pray, “Lord, tell me Your will,” while quietly hoping it aligns with our own.
But a surrendered heart says, “Lord, whatever You say, my answer is yes.”
God still speaks today—primarily through His Word, by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and in ways that are always consistent with Scripture. The question is often not whether God is speaking, but whether we are slowing down enough to listen.
A heart that is constantly distracted will struggle to hear the gentle voice of God.
Make room for silence.
Open His Word.
Pray honestly.
Wait expectantly.
The goal is not simply to receive direction from God but to know the God who gives it.
Reflection Question
When I spend time with God, am I only speaking, or am I also taking time to listen?
Prayer
Lord, give me a heart like Samuel’s. Teach me to quiet the distractions around me and to listen for Your voice through Your Word and Your Spirit. Help me to respond with obedience whenever You speak.
