Ask God for Wisdom

Scripture — James 1:5–8 (KJV)

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.

For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”

Focus

You do not have to figure everything out on your own. God invites you to ask Him for wisdom.

Devotional

There are moments in life when the answer is not obvious.

You may have two good options.

You may not know when to move, when to wait, what to say, or what decision to make.

In those moments, James gives us a simple instruction:

Ask God.

God is not annoyed when you need wisdom.

He is not frustrated that you do not already know the answer.

James says God gives generously.

That means you can come to Him honestly and say:

“Lord, I do not know what to do.”

That is not weakness.

That is dependence.

But wisdom is more than getting God to tell you which option you want Him to approve.

Real wisdom begins with a surrendered heart.

Sometimes we ask God for direction while secretly already deciding what we are going to do.

We want confirmation, not guidance.

But asking in faith means trusting that God’s wisdom is better than ours.

Even when His answer is different from what we expected.

Even when He tells us to wait.

Even when obedience costs something.

Godly wisdom will never contradict God’s Word.

So when you need direction, pray.

Then open Scripture.

Pay attention to biblical principles.

Seek counsel from mature believers.

Look at your motives honestly.

And be willing to obey what God makes clear.

You may not always receive a dramatic sign.

Often, God leads through Scripture, prayer, wise counsel, circumstances, and a heart that is becoming increasingly surrendered to Him.

The goal is not merely to make the smartest decision.

The goal is to become the kind of person who trusts God enough to follow His wisdom.

Reflection Questions

What decision do I need God’s wisdom for right now?

Am I truly asking for His direction, or am I asking Him to approve what I already want?

Prayer

Father, I need Your wisdom. Help me not depend only on my own understanding. Show me what is true, wise, and pleasing to You. Give me a heart that is willing to obey, even when Your direction is different from what I expected. Keep me from being double-minded, and teach me to trust You fully.
