Blessed Are The Poor In Spirit
Share
“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.”
Matthew 5:3 NLT
questions:
Why “poor”?
This speaks of spiritual need—being humble and aware of our dependence on God (Isaiah 57:15; Psalm 34:18). It refers to those who recognize their need for Jesus (Luke 18:13–14).
Do we stay poor?
In a humble sense, yes, because we will always need Jesus; on our own we are spiritually poor (John 15:5; Revelation 3:17). But in another sense, no, because Jesus enriches us with the promise of heaven when we believe in Him (2 Corinthians 8:9; Ephesians 1:3). Heaven belongs to the humble in heart (James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5–6).
Truths:
• Jesus is speaking to His people—us—about the necessity of humility (Micah 6:8; Matthew 18:4).
• Relying on God and His promises leads a person to the Kingdom of Heaven (Proverbs 3:5–6; Jeremiah 17:7).
• The Kingdom of Heaven is only for those who humble themselves, knowing they need Jesus (Luke 6:20; Matthew 19:14).
Application:
As Christians, we must remain humble, always aware of our need for Jesus (Philippians 2:3–4). Without humility, we can easily drift onto a path that leads us away from Him (1 Corinthians 10:12). Today, take a step of faith: lean on the teachings of Jesus, release your own ways, and follow what He teaches in Scripture (James 1:22; John 14:23).
Prayer:
Thank You, God, for today. I’m so grateful for this life. Please make me humble, Lord (Psalm 51:10). I want to follow Your ways and not my own (Proverbs 16:9). I give You everything I have. I love You and I praise You. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, amen.
