Build Your Life on the Rock
Share
Scripture — Matthew 7:24–27 (KJV)
“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.”
Focus
A strong life is built by hearing Jesus and actually doing what He says.
Devotional
Jesus ends the Sermon on the Mount with a picture everyone can understand.
Two people build houses.
From the outside, the houses may look similar.
But the difference is underneath.
One is built on rock.
The other is built on sand.
Then the storm comes.
Notice something important:
Both houses face the storm.
Following Jesus does not mean you will never face difficulty.
Christians still experience disappointment, pressure, loss, temptation, uncertainty, and painful seasons.
The difference is not whether the storm comes.
The difference is what your life is built on when it does.
Jesus says the wise person does two things:
They hear His words, and they obey them.
It is possible to know a lot about the Bible and still build on sand.
You can hear sermons.
Read Scripture.
Listen to worship music.
Know Christian language.
But Jesus says the foundation becomes strong when truth turns into obedience.
When Jesus says forgive, you forgive.
When Scripture says flee temptation, you stop playing with it.
When God calls you to love people, you love them.
When His Word corrects you, you change direction.
Every act of obedience is another part of the foundation being strengthened.
You may not notice the difference immediately.
But eventually, storms reveal foundations.
That is why the decisions you make in ordinary seasons matter so much.
You are building something every day.
Your habits are building.
Your relationships are building.
Your thoughts are building.
Your choices are building.
The question is:
What are you building them on?
Do not wait for the storm to decide that Jesus is trustworthy.
Build on Him now.
Then when circumstances shake everything around you, your foundation can remain secure.
Reflection Questions
Is there anything Jesus has clearly taught me that I am hearing but not obeying?
What is one practical act of obedience I can take today?
Prayer
Jesus, I want my life to be built on You. Help me not only hear Your Word but obey it. Show me where I have ignored, delayed, or compromised what You have said. Give me courage to live Your truth even when it is difficult. Build in me a foundation that will remain strong through every season.
