Keep Your Eyes on What Is Eternal

Scripture — 2 Corinthians 4:16–18 (KJV)
“For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.
For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;
While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
Focus
What you see right now is real, but it is not the whole story.
Devotional
It is easy to become consumed by what is directly in front of you.
The pressure.
The disappointment.
The unanswered prayer.
The difficult season.
The thing that did not go the way you hoped.
When those things take up all of your attention, it can feel like they are permanent.
But Paul reminds us that what we see is temporary.
That does not mean suffering is fake or unimportant.
Paul experienced real hardship.
He knew what it meant to be exhausted, rejected, persecuted, and discouraged.
Yet he still said:
“We faint not.”
Why?
Because he was looking beyond the present moment.
He knew that God was doing something deeper than what could be seen on the surface.
Your circumstances may be difficult while God is strengthening your character.
A closed door may hurt while God is redirecting your future.
Waiting may feel empty while God is teaching you trust.
A hard season may feel like nothing is happening while God is renewing you inwardly day by day.
Faith does not deny reality.
Faith sees a greater reality.
This life is temporary.
Your relationship with God is eternal.
The things people praise today will eventually disappear.
Money will not last forever.
Status will not last forever.
Possessions will not last forever.
But what God does in you and through you for His kingdom has eternal value.
That should change what you chase.
Instead of asking only:
“How can I make my life easier?”
Ask:
“How can I live today for what actually lasts?”
Maybe that means investing more deeply in people.
Maybe it means choosing integrity when compromise would benefit you.
Maybe it means serving when no one notices.
Maybe it means continuing to trust God through a season you do not understand.
Do not allow temporary problems to make you forget your eternal hope.
God is still working.
And what He is preparing is greater than what you can currently see.
Reflection Questions
What temporary situation has been taking too much of my attention lately?
What would change if I viewed it from an eternal perspective?
Prayer
Father, help me not become consumed by temporary things. When life feels heavy, renew me inwardly and remind me that You are still working. Give me an eternal perspective. Help me invest my time, energy, and heart into what matters to You and what will last forever.
