Keep Your Heart Soft

Scripture — Hebrews 3:12–15 (KJV)
“Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;
While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts…”
Focus
A soft heart responds to God quickly instead of repeatedly resisting Him.
Devotional
Most people do not wake up one morning and suddenly decide to become distant from God.
Usually, drifting happens slowly.
One compromise.
One ignored conviction.
One excuse.
One sin you stop taking seriously.
One moment where God speaks and you decide, “I’ll deal with that later.”
Hebrews warns us about becoming hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
Sin is deceptive because it rarely tells you where it is taking you.
It tells you:
“This is not that serious.”
“You can stop whenever you want.”
“Everyone does it.”
“You can obey God later.”
But every time we knowingly resist God, it becomes a little easier to resist Him again.
That is why Scripture says:
“Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”
Today matters.
When God convicts you, respond today.
When you know you need to apologize, do it today.
When you recognize something needs to change, begin today.
When God tells you to surrender something, do not keep negotiating.
A soft heart says:
“Lord, if You show me something, I want to respond.”
This passage also tells believers to encourage one another daily.
We need other Christians.
Sometimes another person can recognize spiritual drift before we see it ourselves.
That is why godly friendships and church community matter.
You need people who will encourage you when you are tired and tell you the truth when you are drifting.
Do not surround yourself only with people who agree with everything you do.
Surround yourself with people who help you follow Jesus.
And remember: conviction is not God rejecting you.
Conviction is often evidence of His mercy.
God loves you enough to interrupt the path that is pulling you away from Him.
So when He speaks, listen.
When He corrects, respond.
Keep your heart tender.
Reflection Questions
Is there anything God has been convicting me about that I keep delaying?
Do I have people in my life who encourage me to follow Jesus more faithfully?
Prayer
Father, keep my heart soft toward You. Do not let me become comfortable with sin or ignore Your conviction. When You speak, help me respond quickly. Give me humility to receive correction and surround me with people who will encourage me toward Jesus. Keep me faithful to You all the way to the end.
