Let God Transform the Way You Think
Share
Scripture — Philippians 4:6–9 (KJV)
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.”
Focus
Peace grows when you bring your worries to God and intentionally direct your mind toward truth.
Devotional
Your thoughts have a powerful effect on the way you live.
What you continually think about can shape your emotions, your decisions, your attitude, and even the way you see God.
Paul gives us a practical pattern in this passage.
First, pray instead of allowing worry to control you.
When something begins weighing on your mind, bring it to God.
Tell Him what you need.
Tell Him what you are afraid of.
Tell Him what you do not understand.
But Paul also says to pray with thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving reminds you that even while you are waiting for an answer, God has already been faithful.
Then comes the promise of God’s peace.
The situation may not immediately change.
The answer may not come instantly.
But God can guard your heart and mind while you wait.
Then Paul goes even further.
He tells us what kinds of things should fill our minds:
What is true.
Pure.
Honorable.
Right.
Lovely.
Worthy of praise.
That means you cannot control every thought that enters your mind, but you can choose which thoughts you allow to stay.
When fear enters, compare it with truth.
When bitterness enters, bring it to Jesus.
When temptation enters, redirect your attention.
When lies enter, answer them with Scripture.
Do not feed thoughts that are slowly poisoning your heart.
Feed your mind with what draws you toward God.
And notice that Paul does not stop with thinking.
He says to do what you have learned.
Truth is meant to become action.
Think differently.
Pray differently.
Live differently.
God wants His peace to affect both your mind and your daily life.
Reflection Questions
What thought has been taking up too much space in my mind lately?
Is it true, pure, and consistent with what God says?
Prayer
Father, I give You the worries and thoughts that have been consuming me. Guard my heart and mind with Your peace. Help me recognize lies quickly and replace them with Your truth. Teach me to think about what is pure, honorable, and pleasing to You, and help me live out what You are teaching me.
Today’s Challenge
When a negative or anxious thought repeatedly comes back today, stop and ask:
“Is this thought true according to God’s Word?”
Then replace it with one truth from Scripture.
