Words Matter

Ephesians 4:29 (NKJV) – “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”

questions:

What are corrupt words in this context?

Any words that pull someone—or yourself—out of the will of God. These are words that go against the principles in the Bible. For example, the principle of love: since God is love, we are also called to show love through the way we speak.

What words are good for necessary edification?

To edify means to build up, encourage, and strengthen someone in their faith and daily life. Words that edify are words that give life, hope, and love to those you speak to.

Truths:

• This command from God can have life-or-death consequences. The words you speak matter deeply to God and to the people around you.

• God calls us to edify others so they can experience His love and grace through us.

• Words impact you and the people around you more than you realize.

Application:

Take a step back and reflect on the words you use daily. Do they build up, or do they tear others down? Let’s grow in speaking words that bring life. Even when it’s difficult, let’s show the love of God through our speech. Compliment someone today. Remind them that God loves them and has a wonderful plan for their life. Share the gospel with someone today.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, I thank You for this day and for everything You’ve done. I boldly come before Your throne and ask for awareness in the words I speak. Let my words build others up and be pleasing to You. God, I love You and I praise You. In the mighty name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
