Proverbs 1:33 (NKJV)
“But whoever listens to me will dwell safely,
And will be secure, without fear of evil.”
In this verse, God is making a powerful promise: whoever listens to Him will dwell in safety and security, free from the fear of evil. This is especially meaningful in a generation that has been plagued by fear for so long.
So what kind of fear is Scripture talking about here?
This is not the fear of the Lord that we see throughout the Bible. The fear mentioned in Proverbs 1:33 is a crippling, anxious fear—the kind that brings worry, paralysis, and oppression. That kind of fear does not come from God; it comes from the enemy.
The fear of the Lord, on the other hand, is an awe-filled, reverent fear. It’s difficult to explain in one sentence, but at its core, it is a deep reverence rooted in love—a fear of being separated from God, His goodness, and His holiness.
So how do we abstain from the fear of evil?
The verse tells us plainly: “whoever listens to me.”
That raises an important question—how do we listen to God?
We listen by reading the Word.
The Bible is living and active. God’s Word leads us away from evil and draws us into reverence and awe for Him—the true fear of the Lord.
We listen through prayer.
Pray with humility. Pray with patience. Pray with confidence. Remember, you are a child of God, empowered by His Spirit. Apart from Him we can do nothing, but through His love and guidance, we are made strong.
