Preparing Your Heart

“Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.””
Luke 2:8-12 NKJV
Merry Christmas Eve, everyone!
This devotional is meant to prepare your heart for what God has called you to receive in this season.
In Luke 2:8–12, we see God sending an angel to appear to shepherds—men who were considered the lowest of society. They were often overlooked, marginalized, and seen as unimportant. Yet God chose them to be among the very first to hear the announcement of Jesus’ birth and to see the Savior with their own eyes.
This shows us something powerful: God delights in using imperfect people. He entrusts His greatest revelation not to kings or religious elites, but to humble shepherds. The angel gives them clear direction and a specific sign: the child would be born in Bethlehem, the city of David; He would be the Messiah, Christ the Lord; and He would be found wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.
That detail is deeply significant. Jesus did not come in luxury or power—He came low. He met humanity right where they were. He came for people who knew they needed a Savior.
Later in the passage, we see the shepherds respond immediately. They leave their fields and go straight to find the child. God leads and directs the humble—the willing hearts who respond in obedience.
Maybe you feel like one of those shepherds today—like you’re the lowest of the low, overlooked, or unqualified. But here’s what’s beautiful about that position: when you have nothing, you’re in the perfect place for God to use you. God has always used shepherds to shape history—Abraham, David, and now these men who were first to witness the birth of Christ.
If you feel like you have nothing to offer, that’s exactly where God starts. He isn’t looking for perfection; He’s looking for a willing vessel. Someone ready to proclaim the hope and joy of the gospel.
