Remaining Humble Before God

Scripture: James 4:6
“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
Focus:
Humility positions us to receive God’s grace.
Devotional
Pride is one of the most dangerous sins because it often hides beneath the surface.
It can look like self-reliance instead of dependence on God.
It can look like needing recognition instead of quietly serving.
It can even disguise itself as spiritual maturity while quietly believing, “I’ve got this.”
James gives us a sobering reminder: God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
Notice that God doesn’t merely dislike pride—He opposes it. Why? Because pride convinces us we don’t need Him.
Humility, on the other hand, acknowledges the truth:
Every good gift comes from God.
Every ability is a gift.
Every opportunity is an act of grace.
Every breath is sustained by Him.
Jesus is our greatest example. Though He is the Son of God, He humbled Himself by taking on the form of a servant and becoming obedient even to death on a cross (Philippians 2:5–8).
If the King of kings chose humility, how much more should His followers?
True humility is not thinking less of yourself.
It is thinking of yourself less and thinking of Christ more.
Reflection Question
Is there an area of my life where pride has made me less dependent on God?
Prayer
Father, search my heart and expose any pride within me. Teach me to walk in humility, remembering that everything I have is a gift from You. Help me to serve others with the same humility that Jesus showed.
