Run the Race With Endurance
Share
Scripture — Hebrews 12:1–3 (KJV)
“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.”
Focus
The Christian life is not about starting strong. It is about faithfully following Jesus all the way to the end.
Devotional
Hebrews describes your life with Christ as a race.
And if you are going to run well, Scripture says there are things you must lay aside.
Some things are clearly sin.
Others may not necessarily be sinful, but they are still weights.
A distraction can become a weight.
The approval of people can become a weight.
An unhealthy relationship can become a weight.
Constant entertainment can become a weight.
Even good things can become weights when they begin distracting you from what God has called you to do.
So ask yourself:
What is helping me run toward Jesus—and what is slowing me down?
But removing weights is only part of the passage.
Hebrews tells us where our attention should go:
“Looking unto Jesus.”
That changes everything.
If you constantly look at other people, comparison will wear you out.
If you constantly look at yourself, your failures can discourage you.
If you constantly look at your circumstances, fear can overwhelm you.
But when you look to Jesus, you remember who is leading you.
Jesus endured the cross.
Jesus defeated sin and death.
Jesus remained faithful through suffering.
And the same Jesus who started His work in you is able to carry you forward.
There will be moments when following God feels exciting.
There will also be moments when obedience feels difficult, repetitive, or costly.
Keep running.
When you fall, get back up.
When you become tired, look to Jesus.
When temptation comes, lay it aside.
When distractions appear, remember what you are running toward.
You do not have to run someone else’s race.
God has placed a race before you.
Your responsibility is to faithfully run it with your eyes fixed on Christ.
Reflection Questions
What weight or sin is currently slowing down my walk with Jesus?
And what would it practically look like for me to lay it aside today?
Prayer
“Jesus, I want to run the race You have placed before me. Show me anything that is distracting me, weighing me down, or pulling me away from You. Give me courage to lay aside sin and anything else that keeps me from following You wholeheartedly. When I become tired or discouraged, remind me to look toward You. Give me endurance to remain faithful all the way to the end.”
Today’s Challenge
Identify one weight that has been distracting you from God.
Do something practical today to remove it or put it back in its proper place.
Then spend a few uninterrupted minutes simply focusing on Jesus.
