The Cost of Following Jesus
Share
Scripture: Luke 9:23
“Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me.”
Focus:
Following Jesus requires daily surrender.
Devotional
The invitation to follow Jesus is free—but it is not without cost.
Jesus never promised an easy life. He promised abundant life, eternal life, and His presence, but He also called His followers to deny themselves.
To deny yourself doesn’t mean you stop being who God created you to be. It means you surrender your own desires, ambitions, and will to the authority of Christ.
Every morning, we have a choice:
Will I live for my kingdom or God’s Kingdom?
Taking up your cross is a daily decision to say:
- “Lord, Your will above mine.”
- “Your truth above my feelings.”
- “Your glory above my comfort.”
This kind of surrender isn’t a burden—it leads to freedom. The more we let go of our lives, the more we discover the life Christ has for us.
Ironically, the world tells us to find ourselves by living for ourselves. Jesus tells us we find our lives by giving them to Him.
Reflection Question
What is one area of my life that I have been reluctant to fully surrender to Jesus?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for giving everything for me. Today I choose to deny myself, take up my cross, and follow You. Teach me to surrender daily and trust that Your way is always better than mine.
