The Cross Before the Crown

Scripture: Hebrews 12:2

“Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Focus:

God often uses suffering to prepare us for glory.

Devotional

We naturally want the crown without the cross.

We want victory without the battle.
We want growth without the stretching.
We want resurrection without crucifixion.

But when we look at Jesus, we see a different pattern.

Before the resurrection came the cross.

Before the exaltation came humility.

Before the crown came suffering.

Jesus endured the cross because He saw the joy that was set before Him. His eyes were fixed beyond the pain to the Father’s purpose.

The same is true for us.

Not every hardship is a direct result of our choices. Sometimes God allows difficult seasons to deepen our faith, refine our character, and draw us closer to Him. As Romans 5:3–5 teaches, suffering can produce perseverance, character, and hope when we entrust ourselves to God.

If you’re walking through a difficult season, don’t lose heart. God has not abandoned you. He may be shaping you into the person He has called you to become.

One day, you’ll look back and see that God was at work even in the pain.

Reflection Question

How might God be using my current struggle to make me more like Christ?

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for enduring the cross for my salvation. When I face trials, help me keep my eyes fixed on You. Give me the strength to endure with hope, trusting that You are working even through hardship.
