The Power of Obedience

Scripture: John 14:15

“If you love Me, keep My commands.”

Focus:

Obedience is the evidence of our love for Christ.

Devotional

In today’s culture, love is often defined by feelings. But Jesus defines love differently.

He says, “If you love Me, keep My commands.”

Jesus isn’t saying we earn His love through obedience. Rather, obedience is the natural response of a heart that loves Him.

Think about a healthy relationship. If you truly love someone, you don’t look for ways to ignore their wishes—you desire to honor them. The same is true in our relationship with God.

Obedience is not about rules; it’s about relationship.

Every act of obedience says:

  • “Lord, I trust Your wisdom more than my own.”
  • “I believe Your ways are better than mine.”
  • “I love You enough to follow You, even when it’s difficult.”

Many of God’s greatest blessings in Scripture came on the other side of obedience.

Noah built the ark before he saw the flood.

Joshua marched around the walls before they fell.

Peter stepped out of the boat before he experienced the miracle.

God often asks us to obey first and understand later.

The question isn’t whether God’s commands are convenient. The question is whether we trust the One who gave them.

Reflection Question

Is there an area of my life where I know what God is asking me to do, but I have been hesitant to obey?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for loving me first. Give me a heart that delights in obeying You—not out of obligation, but out of love. Help me trust that every command You give is for Your glory and my good.
