Walk by the Spirit
Share
Scripture — Galatians 5:16–18, 22–25 (KJV)
“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other…
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
Focus
Following Jesus is not just about trying harder. It is about learning to live under the leadership of the Holy Spirit.
Devotional
Every Christian knows the tension Paul describes.
Part of you wants to obey God.
Another part wants what is easier, more comfortable, or immediately satisfying.
That battle is real.
But Paul does not simply say, “Try harder not to sin.”
He says:
Walk in the Spirit.
Walking is something you do continuously.
Step by step.
Moment by moment.
That means dependence on God is not only for church, prayer time, or major decisions.
It is for everyday life.
When you are frustrated, walk by the Spirit.
When temptation shows up, walk by the Spirit.
When someone annoys you, walk by the Spirit.
When you have a decision to make, walk by the Spirit.
And as you continue walking with God, something begins to grow in your life.
Fruit.
Love.
Joy.
Peace.
Patience.
Kindness.
Goodness.
Faithfulness.
Gentleness.
Self-control.
Notice that fruit grows.
You cannot tape fruit onto a dead tree and call it healthy.
In the same way, Christianity is not about pretending to have godly character on the outside.
The Holy Spirit changes you from the inside.
Your job is to remain surrendered to Him.
Pay attention when He convicts you.
Obey when He leads you.
Turn away from sin quickly.
Stay close to Scripture.
Pray throughout your day.
The more you surrender to the Spirit, the less control the flesh has over you.
This transformation usually does not happen overnight.
Fruit takes time.
But if you keep walking with God, you should begin seeing evidence that He is changing you.
Maybe you are more patient than you used to be.
Maybe you forgive faster.
Maybe temptation has less control.
Maybe your reactions are becoming more like Jesus.
Do not only ask:
“What am I accomplishing for God?”
Also ask:
“What is the Holy Spirit producing in me?”
Reflection Questions
Which fruit of the Spirit does God most need to develop in me right now?
Where have I been relying on willpower instead of depending on the Holy Spirit?
Prayer
Holy Spirit, lead me today. Help me recognize when my desires are pulling me away from God. Give me strength to say no to sin and yes to Your leading. Produce Your fruit in my life so that my attitudes, words, and actions look more like Jesus. Teach me to depend on You moment by moment.
