Who Is Your God?

“For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many ‘gods’ and many ‘lords’), yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.”

1 Corinthians 8:5–6 (NIV)

“There are many gods and many lords.” I know you might be reading that and thinking, Of course, I know there’s one God and one Lord—Jesus Christ. And I thought that for a while too, until I was reading in the Old Testament about when Moses went up the mountain to receive the tablets from God. While he was gone, God’s chosen people began building a golden calf—a god they could worship, one that gave them comfort.

Now relate that to today.

People in our generation are prone to idolizing their phones, relationships, money, and power. But I want to focus on one in particular: the phone.

I still often struggle with the urge to go on my phone instead of spending time with God. Sometimes I wrestle with understanding how Jesus Christ—through whom all things came and through whom we live—is still there when I’m choosing to idolize my phone.

I don’t know about you, but it’s hard to hear God when you’re substituting time with Him for quick comfort and pleasure from a screen.

So today, I want to encourage you to come alongside me as we stop idolizing our phones and start choosing Him again.
